Medical weight loss is a hot topic of conversation right now thanks to Semaglutide and Tirzepatide! These medications have helped thousands of people lose weight successfully and keep it off!
Semaglutide and Tirzepatide are once weekly injectables that belong to a class of medications called GLP-1, glucagon-like peptide-1, receptor agonists. They can stimulate weight loss by balancing blood sugar and suppressing appetite. This makes it easier to reduce the number of calories you consume and turn off cravings. On average, patients lost ~11% of their body weight after just 20 weeks of treatment with Semaglutide!
At Rejuvenated Medical Spa, we combine the use of these GLP-1 agonists with hormone balance, lifestyle changes, nutritional support, supplements and more to help you achieve your weight loss goals!
Semaglutide is the generic name for Ozempic and Wegovy. Tirzepatide is the generic name for Mounjaro or Zepbound. There are verying names for these medications because each one holds a different indication from the FDA. Ozempic and Mounjaro are specifically targeted at those with Type 2 Diabetes. Wegovy and Zepbound are specifically targeted at those with obesity.
Tirzepatide is very similiar to Semaglutide, but it has an additional mechanism of action called a GIP agonist. This means it mimics 2 different hormones in the body. GIP may work with GLP-1 to decrease appetite and increase energy expenditure, resulting in improved weight loss and reductions in blood sugar or cholesterol. Incretin hormones (such as GLP-1 and GIP) are released when food is consumed. They can help provide a feeling of fullness. They also boost insulin production in the pancreas and suppress the liver from producing glucose.
Both medications are a once per week subcutaneous injection that can be increased every 4 weeks to a maximum dose; however, not all patients require a maxium dose to achieve their weight loss goals.
How much weight will I lose on semaglutide?
The Semaglutide Treatment Effect in People with Obesity (STEP) trials have found that obese patients who take 2.4 mg of semaglutide weekly lose an average of 6% of their body weight by week 12 and about 11% of their body weight by week 20.
How fast does semaglutide work for weight loss?
If you’re taking semaglutide for weight management, you can expect to see some results by the end of the first month, though the results may be subtle in the beginning. Larger amounts of excess weight will begin in subsequent weeks, with peak weight loss happening between weeks 8-28.
Is semaglutide approved for weight loss in non-diabetics?
The FDA approved Wegovy (generic semaglutide) and Zepbound (generic Tirzepatide) for weight management in adults. When used with evidence-based lifestyle interventions, such as improved diet and exercise, these medications can greatly improve weight loss.
Do you need a prescription for Semaglutide or Tirzepatide?
Yes, these medications must be prescribed by a medical provider. Because of the risk of side effects or interactions with other prescription drugs and herbal products, you’ll need to check in with a practitioner on a regular basis.
